The Qinghai-Tibet Railway, as controversial as it is, was a useful tool in getting to Tibet. You can fly, but the sudden change in altitude from the plains of China to the grand heights of the roof of the world can be a bit much. With the train, you slug along, inching higher and higher over 48 hours, easing the shock.

Still, not even Tibetans themselves were immune to a little altitude sickness. The woman (bottom centre) with whom I shared a cabin had only been out of Lhasa for 3 weeks, but on return she felt nauseous, lighthead and dizzy. You also meet plenty of interesting figures on the train, with monks sneaking in from their hard-seat carriages to have a chat, and to eat their ground barley (also known as tsampa, top left) with tea.

Unforgettable journey.

Matt
