Thorpe Park has super-sized the seats on one of its most popular rides - which means the UK's obesity crisis is not just threatening people's health but their fun too.

The Surrey attraction said it had to tackle the heavyweight issue to make sure all its customers could enjoy the Nemesis Inferno ride.

An 'embarrassing' number of people have had to be turned away because they were too big.

All shapes and sizes: Thorpe Park has installed bigger seats on the Nemesis Inferno ride to accommodate larger visitors

In a statement, the theme park said it believed 'people of all shapes and sizes should be able to experience the adrenalin-pumping euphoria the extreme attractions have to offer'.

Thorpe Park's website states that there is a '51 inch torso restriction' on the rollercoaster ride, described as a 'mad inverted Hell ride into the fiery pit of a volcano'.

There are now two larger seats which cater for heftier visitors with plans to roll out bigger seats on other rides.

Divisional director Mike Vallis said: 'We listen to the concerns of our customers and continually monitor trends, so that we can modify our offering to ensure we're giving them the very best possible experience.

'The reality is that we are super-sizing - and that's a fact we're embracing. Why shouldn't people be comfortable when they are enjoying a day out with their friends or family?'

Obesity in England has tripled in the last two decades, affecting 24 per cent of women and 22 per cent of men, according to NHS figures.

And experts forecast that levels in the UK will increase two-fold in the next 20 years.
