King Tower

King Tower

The tallest tower in each village is know as the "king tower" and is between 100 and 130 feet tall. The foundations of the Qiang watchtowers () are usually about 10 feet wide consisting of large rocks. The main body has a smooth exterior with very tight gaps between the stones and straight edges and corners. Wider at the base, they gradually narrow toward the top. Most watchtowers are about 65 feet high, though the tallest reach up to 165 feet, and have ten to twenty round floors inside. The entrances are typically up to 30 feet above the ground, reachable only by ladder that can then be pulled inside preventing access to others.

The owner of this watchtower, who also owns a beautiful apple orchard right next to his home, told us that he doesn't know exactly how long this tower has been in his family, but researchers have estimated for about 60 generations.
