Old Man Cypress

At the north end of Long Lake, there is a peculiar cypress tree with one side bare of branches and leaves. It is thought to look like a single-armed old man. According to local legend, Jiuzhaigou was once ruled by an evil demon. Under his reign the local people led a miserable and hard life. That was until a brave old hunter battled against the demon, eventually driving him out of Jiuzhaigou. In the process however, the hunter lost an arm. To prevent the return of the demon, the brave old hunter now stands guard at the end of Long Lake with his sword in his one remaining hand to protect the park and the local people.
