Greenwich named as a must-see destination for 2012

London's historic borough of Greenwich has made it into an exclusive list of the world's top ten tourist attractions for 2012.

Travel guide Frommer's included the southeast London spot in the list for its ability to reinvent itself since it emerged as a naval centre in the 18th century.

Greenwich is set to become a royal borough next year as well as playing an important part in the Olympics as a host borough.

Recognition: Greenwich has been listed as a must-see destination for 2012

Greenwich Park, the oldest of the royal parks, will be the venue for equestrian events, modern pentathlon and shooting during the Olympics and Paralympics and the borough will also host trampolining, basketball and artistic gymnastics.

The Frommer's guide highlights the baroque facades by British architects such as Christopher Wren, Nichola Hawksmoor and Sir John Vanbrugh, as well as the borough's proximity to the Thames and views across the park to Canary Wharf.

Greenwich is also home to the famous clipper ship the Cutty Sark and the Royal Observatory and the beautiful National Maritime Museum.

Other places included in the list of must-see destinations were Girona in Spain, Beirut in Lebanon and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

Ghana, the Bay of Fundy in Canada, Chongqing in China, Fukuoka in Japan and the Caribbean island of Curacao were similarly recognised.

When it comes to recommending other great destinations, Frommer's listed Tromso in Norway as the best cruise stop-off for 2012, Moab in the US state of Utah as the top adventure destination and Chicago as the best city break spot.

Lima, in Peru, was nominated the top food and drink destination, while the Albanian R! iviera w as commended for providing the best-value holidays.
