Tibet's Wild East

Garz Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is the homeland of the Khampa people - wild-looking, fierce warriors who still carry knives and are ready to use them if excessively provoked.
Tagong lies 112 kilometers north of Kangding (Garz's capital) at an elevation of about 3,700 meters, and is a small nomad trading town. From late spring through autumn, Tibetan nomads live in black yak wool tents on the grasslands surrounding Tagong. There are many monasteries in the area, most notably the Lhagang Monastery and the Ani Gompa (Nunnery) just outside of town. Very close to town is the 5,820 meter peak of Zhara Lhatse, also known as Yala Snow Mountain (), dominating the skyline surrounding Tagong.
