A fairly common Taiwanese fear, particularly with the older generation, is one of deep water. This is due to the superstition that discontented ghosts lurk in deep water and the body is particularly vulnerable whilst submerged. This supersition mixed with the low Taiwanese swimming abilities mean that the majority of public pools are only around 5' deep.
